My Mother
David Poyant first picked up a needle at sixty-six. What began as a tribute to his mother became an entirely new life, and his hand-stitched work now hangs in museum collections and has shown at the Smithsonian.
Now exhibited from New Bedford to Venice.
The Story
My journey into embroidery began with a memory of my mother. I can still picture her sitting in the evening,
sewing while Johnny Carson played on the television. At the time, I never imagined that years later those quiet moments would become part of my own artistic story.
When I began embroidering at age 66, I found myself thinking about her more and more. Working slowly with
needle and thread gave me a connection to those memories,the patience, care, and simple beauty of creating
something by hand.
In many ways, every piece I create carries a little of her with it. What began as a new artistic adventure became something deeper: a way of remembering my mother and honoring the influence she had on me, even though neither of us could have known where that influence would eventually lead.
I began stitching, and somewhere in the rhythm of the thread, the memory of my mother returned to me.
The Process
Technology opens the door.
The hand gives it soul.
David uses AI to explore an image - composition, color, atmosphere. Then he leaves the screen behind and renders it entirely by hand.

I approach each embroidery as a quiet meditation - a dialogue between thread, time, and emotion.
In a world that rushes past beauty, I want my work to hold time still. One stitch at a time.
